Cigar Review

Tatuaje Cojonu 2006

Made in Miami, Florida

Wrapper – Nicaraguan Corojo

Binder – Nicaraguan

Filler – Nicaraguan

Size – 6.5 x 52

This is a good looking cigar with a nearly flawless wrapper around a very solidly rolled binder and filler.  The Corojo wrapper has a barely noticeable barnyard aroma to it. The torpedo head cut with good resistance due to the excellent rolling. The draw through the unlit cigar was firm with hints of aromatic wood and spices to the tongue. The lighting was easy and flawless with ample smoke with each draw. The cigar burned moderately slow with only minor variations. The flavor initially intensified then leveled off to a well rounded mild spicy toastiness. The overall aroma of the smoke was a bit heavy but of a nice aromatic woodiness. The medium gray, firm ash held very well throughout. The finish was well rounded and full with no harshness, sitting well on the palate.

I give this a 91 based on the quality of this cigar.

Other Reviews of the Tatuaje 2006 Cojonu

These stogies were masterminded by Pete Johnson and masterblended by Jose “Pepin” Garcia. The Cojonu, or "monster blend," is fabled to be so strong that they "would be a novelty cigar that just true smokers will smoke," said Johnson. “Cojonu is supposed to be strong, a strength that hits you in the gut, not on the palate.“ Well, we’ll see about that.

But, first things first, I have to give this bad boy the once over. At first glance, this is a perfectly shaped torpedo; dark and rich with enough oil in the wrapper to reflect my image. I poke and prod the cigar looking for soft spots or other imperfections, but there are none. The nose is a mild blend of hay and chicken-coop, my favorites. I quickly decide that this beauty is worthy to light. So I do.

I slowly toast the generous foot and BAMM, I am rewarded with a full throttle of body and flavor. I’ve just been hit by a spice truck going 90 in a 25-mile-an-hour zone. Yep, strong cigar. The flavor is big, VERY big. Huge gobs of smoke further cloud my reason and sensibilities, yet I press on.

I get an uneven burn with a big blister forming on one side of the cigar. I slow myself down and resist the urge to touch up this spice bomb. Serves it right for toasting me early on. Oblivious to the uneven burn, the cigar self-corrects and the flowered, light gray ash hangs on for an inch, in spite of itself. I tap off at the one-inch mark, the flaky ash settles into my ashtray with aplomb.

Having shed itself of the uneven burn, the smoke progresses toward full and sweet tobacco flavors with a continued, albeit mellower, spice. By the one-third mark, the body and flavors are still huge and the draw and burn are near perfect. The ash is still flaky, but is holding together fine. It looks a lot like a tower of scalloped potatoes.

As I reach the final two inches of the smoke, the flavors are long and intense and stick to my tongue, giving me the urge to smack my lips. So I do. As advertised, this is a monster smoke. With its decided strength, I believe it has great potential for aging and I expect it to show more complexity the next time out. I strongly recommend this cigar for those with experienced palates and a hankering for adventure.
